About the Blog and the Author

Ran Away from the Subscriber:

In the eighteenth century, servants, apprentices, slaves, and seamen often fled their contractual employment or enslavement in search of a better life. Newspaper readers were familiar with the common announcements from frustrated masters that often began, "Ran Away from the Subscriber..."

This blog began in 2010 as a way to share my research into the clothing of runaways in early America. But it has run away on its own and evolved along with my interests, and today I write about the wide world of public history, archaeology, and material culture.

You can read more about my teaching philosophy, find downloadable copies of all my publications, and view images of my tailoring work by visiting my portfolio.

I hope you enjoy reading this blog as much as I enjoy writing it,
